So let me catch y’all up on what’s been going on in my life over the past week or so. For starters, I had the pleasure of interviewing my fellow Detroit sis Tomeka Kolleh, who shared her inspiring story of how stepping out on faith in the midst of adversity wound up landing her a job — AND a promotion, hello! — working for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. The next several days following our interview, I spent the majority of my life transcribing, writing, editing, re-reading, adding and deleting ish — and then repeating that process several hundred times. Then my brain went into WELPITY WELP Mode and shut down completely, which is when I finally decided to stop being an obsessive writer control freak and just publish that mug. The article was so well-received (almost 200 shares on Facebook alone!), that my HU sis Kiah McBride, the managing editor at xoNecole.com (one of my favorite media sites), hit me up that same day asking if they could run my article as a guest feature. UM, YES!
So the next day my article was published on xoNecole.com!!! Y’all already know I was hyped (still am), and of course, Tomeka was ecstatic. But the way everything played out was the epitome of #BlackGirlMagic: three Black women — Tomeka, Kiah and I — coming together and utilizing our platforms to produce something epic. And that’s really what it’s all about, y’all — collaboration and elevation. Which leads me to my next piece of great news! 🙂
So in the midst of all the excitement over the past week, I was nominated for my very first blogger award called the Liebster Award! Just to give y’all a quick spiel on what exactly that is:
The Liebster Award is an online award given to bloggers by other bloggers. It is a fun way to encourage them to keep on blogging and to also spread the word about other great bloggers out there. To participate, you must answer the questions from the person who nominated you – and then tag some other great bloggers with some questions of your own.
With that being said, I would like to personally thank Valaencia Thompson of FroRealDoe.com for nominating me! Valaencia is also a lifestyle blogger that shares her personal experiences as a newlywed, traveler and foodie. About a month ago she wrote an AMAZING post about Meagan Good and her husband that went viral! Her blog is dope so definitely check it out and subscribe!
So now, without further ado, let me get to work on these questions!
What is the best thing that has ever happened to you?
Ooooooh, this is a good one lol. Hmmm. I would honestly have to say that getting baptized and accepting Christ as the head of my life is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s been a process. I’ve always had a strong faith in God, but there is a difference between believing in God and having an intimate relationship with Him, which is something that I had been going back and forth with for a while. Until last year, a couple weeks before my 25th birthday, I decided to get baptized. To say that was a complete spiritual awakening would be an understatement. I kid you not, right after I got baptized and accepted Christ as the head of my life, A LOT of things in my life began to shift: my relationships, my job, my perspective on life — like literally EVERYTHING. Although I’m still learning and growing, I can honestly say that my life is so amazing and full of joy with Christ as the head of it.
Why do you like blogging?
Correction: I LOVE blogging lol. I’ve been writing ever since I was a little girl — from songs, to journal entries, to poems and short stories. Writing is certainly a gift from God, and I’m thankful He chose to plant this seed inside of me. My blog is one of the fruits of my love for writing. It gives me the opportunity to “write my wrongs” and express my feelings and perspectives in a way that is therapeutic and liberating not only for me, but for so many others who can relate to my experiences. But the really fun part about blogging is my writing voice. I’ve always said my writing voice is an exaggerated extension of my actual personality — it’s louder, spunkier, funnier and completely unapologetic lol. I’d even say it’s more confident, although I consider myself to be a sufficiently confident person. So yeah, all that to say, blogging is fun lol.
What are your favorite hobbies?
Reading, writing, online shopping, doing yoga (aka sitting in child’s pose while listening to serene music), and traveling.
Where are you from?
I grew up in Detroit (7 Mile, betta mile!) until I turned 15, which is when my family and I moved to Macomb, MI, which is where I currently reside. Yes, I still live with my parents.
Do you prefer salty or sweet foods?
Hmmm. I guess I never really thought about this lol. Um, I’ll probably say sweet. I’m not a big sweets person, but I love Talenti, so yeah — sweets win lol.
What is something really interesting about you that people may not know?
When I was a little girl, I used to hate my name because I thought it made me sound like a boy. But as I got older, I learned to embrace the uniqueness of my name and who I am as a person, so now I love it. Especially the spelling lol.
Where do you see yourself in 2 years?
I see myself as an entrepreneur, published author, motivational speaker/mentor, and I see my blog having an even stronger following.
What is your blog’s main objective?
The main objective of A2K is to serve as a personal outlet for me to creatively express my thoughts and life experiences, while also serving as a voice of reason for others — namely, women — facing similar life situations in the areas of faith, health, love and self-esteem.
What is something that completely annoys you?
In the winter, when I see people out in the cold with their full winter bubblecoats on and their kids have on shorts and flip flops. Although I have yet to be blessed with children — and a husband to match — every time I see that, I want to drop kick that person before calling CPS. Ugh!
Who do you admire most and why?
As cliché as it sounds, I admire my parents the most. Why? Because they’re frigging amazing! They’ve been happily married for almost 28 years, raised two PAWPIN daughters (shout out to my sisterbae Erin!), and put both of them through college (Erin will be graduating with her degree in broadcast journalism from Howard in May. HU!). My family is my world and I thank God for them.
Welp, there’s that! And noooooow (drumroll, please), I would like to nominate these 6 AMAZING blogs for the Liebster Award!
Here are my questions:
- What inspired you to start blogging?
- What is your favorite book?
- Which genre would your life fall under if it were a movie, and why?
- What is the nastiest food you’ve ever tasted?
- What is one thing you’ve always wanted to do that you’ve never done before?
- What’s the coolest place you’ve ever been?
- What is one major key you’ve learned in life so far?
Let’s keep the #BlackGirlMagic movement going! Remember, it’s all about collaboration and elevation. Stay blessed, y’all!
