From the end of July through the entire month of August, I was looking like I could’ve easily been Lisa Bonet’s long lost half step-daughter (honestly, truly). My linesisters and I took a trip to Barbados the end of July for our five-year Deltaversary, so I decided to go island gal chic with a head full of 22-inch goddess locs. I think I pulled it off. What y’all think?
Anyway, I laid my goddess locs to rest a couple of weeks ago. After combing out all the dead hair, knots and kinks that built up under the layers of Marley braiding hair, I realized that my actual hair had grown significantly since I had first gotten my locs. I’m pretty sure this was a result of the new hair growth oil I started using some months ago. After washing and conditioning my hair, I’d apply small amounts of oil while it was still damp. Since my hair holds a lot of oil, I didn’t need to use much. After using it for a couple months, I started noticing a difference in my hair’s thickness and length. Then, the night before I got my goddess locs put in, I repeated my same wash, condition and oil routine, this time using a little more hair growth oil along with leave-in conditioner to help keep my hair moisturized under the locs. Once I took them out, I could for sure tell a difference in my hair length. Before the locs, my hair was styled in an asymmetrical bob. After I took them out, my hair had grown to pretty much one length.
The hair growth oil I’ve been using is a part of this dope, up and coming natural hair care line called Crown of Glory. The founder, Jessica Williams, says after years of struggling with damaged, over-processed hair, she became inspired to start her hair care journey.
“Honestly, I was awful with my hair,” she said. “I never used oil, moisturizer, or paid it any attention. One day I was sitting on my friends porch and she told me she couldn’t believe how thin and brittle my hair had gotten. This was a few weeks after I had over-processed my hair with a boxed perm I had bought from the grocery store.”
While some of y’all might think her friend’s comment was harsh, it was exactly the push Williams needed to make a change. (Major key: Real friends keep it real). She immediately began looking for products to help jumpstart her new hair care regimen.

“I went to the beauty supply store to find some natural products for my hair,” she said. “But as I read the back of different labels, I was completely confused by the ingredients.”
So instead of buying something from the beauty supply store that day, Williams went straight home and began researching healthier hair care options. Her findings were a huge wake-up call for her.
“I was astounded by all of the harsh chemicals I had been using on myself,” she said. “I definitely needed a change.”
So Williams decided to chop off ALL of her hair and start fresh. She began testing out natural concoctions she had mixed together for her hair and body. Within a year’s time, her hair had grown down to her shoulders. After posting a picture on Facebook to share the progress she had made, Williams received a ton of requests for her mystery hair concoction. From there, Crown of Glory Natural Hair Care was born.
“The name ‘Crown of Glory’ came from the Bible,” Williams shares on her website. “Our hair is a glorious gift from God and we should treat it as such.”
The complete line of natural hair care products — which includes a cleansing co-wash, conditioner, growth oil, Shea moisturizer, beard oil, edge oil and edge control (because we are living in very edgeless times) — is now available for purchase at CrownofGloryNHC.com as well as Kelly Beauty Supply in Detroit, Michigan. Williams says she has been shipping her products to customers all across the country and is currently making moves to get Crown of Glory in more stores domestically and internationally. But for Williams, expanding her businesses means way more than just making a profit.
“I want to continue to motivate women who are not courageous enough to wear their natural hair that they can embrace who they are with love and that they are beautiful in their natural form with no enhancements,” she said. “And I want my company to be global. I plan to establish a corporate office and open a facility where we can manufacture all of our products and hire great employees.”
But what I really wanted to know was Williams’ secret hair care regimen.
“No heat for at least six months at a time, annual trimming, and I drink tons of water,” she told me. “I always try to eat healthy, I deep condition once a week and, most importantly, I do the LOC (leave-in conditioner, oil and cream) method. I apply water to my hair first, then I apply Crown of Glory growth oil and whipped Shea moisturizer. This not only restores moisture but helps me retain length. By doing the LOC method consistently, I have grown my hair to almost 16 inches in two years.”
Williams attributes her success to the people who matter most in her life. “I am nothing without God and my family, and I appreciate my customers and their support,” she says. “I want to show my children that they can conquer their dreams.”
