I honestly don’t know where to start so I’ma just keep typing and see where the Holy Spirit leads me with this blog post.
In the last 48 hours and counting I’ve read various articles and Facebook statuses about R. Kelly allegedly having some sort of secret sex cult comprised of women in their late teens to early twenties being held against their will. The accusations, made by two of the alleged victims’ parents, were introduced to the public yesterday in the form of a 4500-word Buzzfeed article, which read much like a diluted, bootleg version of Fifty Shades of Gray.
Then, Monday evening, TMZ released a video interview with 21-year-old Joycelyn Savage, one of the alleged victims who vehemently refuted her parents’ claims of being abducted and held hostage by the Ignition Remix singer. The video is a whole ‘nother story in itself, and since I’m pressed for time I won’t touch on it today (but side note: homegirl’s edges was LAID and lips popped, honey).
Anyway, as I was reading the Buzzfeed article, the first red flag I saw was a statement the mother (who goes by “J” in the article) made about her and her husband Tim allowing their daughter do business with Kelly:
“In the back of our minds, we were thinking [my daughter] could be around him if I was with her,” J. said. “It didn’t really hit home. Even with the Aaliyah situation, now that I think about it, ‘Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number’ … but you don’t think about that. You grew up with the song, and you like the song.”
Wait, wait, wait. So you mean to tell me you were cool with letting a RENOWNED PEDOPHILE — the same one who married a 15-year-old girl and PEED ON a 16-year-old girl — work with your 19-year-old daughter? Oh… *In my best Jay-Z voice*…. Okay!
So now, according to J. and Tim, their daughter has been living with Kelly in one of his Atlanta residences for the past two years, and during this time they’ve had little to no contact with her. But wait! There’s more.
Three former members of Kelly’s alleged sex circle — Cheryl Mack, Kitti Jones and Asante McGee — have made claims that there are currently six women living in Kelly’s properties in Chicago and Atlanta. According to Mack, Jones and McGee:
[Kelly] controls every aspect of [the victims’] lives: dictating what they eat, how they dress, when they bathe, when they sleep, and how they engage in sexual encounters that he records.
The parents of another young lady — we’ll call her Stacy — are also fighting to get their daughter to return home. The mother, who goes by Theresa for identity purposes, said Stacy first met Kelly at a Florida music festival two years ago in April. After the show, a member of his entourage gave Stacy his number. Mind you, this girl was 17 years old at the time.
Now here’s when I started giving Non-Mother Theresa hella side eye:
Theresa said she initially let her daughter spend time with Kelly because it was “supposed to be a music relationship.” She now regrets that decision.
Ya don’t say!
“My thing was I trusted [him]. I have never been in the music industry before, ever,” Theresa said. “He is a lyrical genius — he is R. Kelly! And the fact is he went to court, he was never found guilty — he was acquitted — and we were led to believe there was no truth in it. Now, I got all of these people asking about why my daughter is there, telling me, ‘All of the charges against Kelly (were) true.’ Well, how come you didn’t tell me that before?”
So let’s just ignore the fact that this man has a VIRAL SEX TAPE OF HIM URINATING ON A TEENAGE GIRL. But wait! There’s more.
Non-Mother Teresa told Buzzfeed that Stacy had actually met up with Kelly at his hotel room one day without telling them. But after she and her husband Angelo found out about the incident, THEY STILL LET HER WORK WITH HIM.
“…one day we were looking for her because she should’ve been coming home from school,” Theresa said. “Then finally we get a text message saying that she’s OK, that she had met up with R. Kelly in his hotel. And I’m like, ‘You met up with R. Kelly at his hotel?’”
Theresa and her husband, Angelo, said they rushed to the hotel and called the police, who advised them to deal with hotel security. Their daughter finally came down to see them, they said, but Kelly refused to talk with them.
After the incident at the hotel, the Florida teen “was only [supposed to be] talking to him when one of us was around,” Theresa said.
“We needed to make sure it was about music, because he was going to mentor her,” she said. “And then from there he wanted her to travel with him so she could see how the music game really was. … We thought it could be an opportunity, and that she was going to be with a guardian — a female guardian that would keep an eye on her.”
But that may have been wishful thinking. Soon enough, the Florida singer was living with Kelly (in his Atlanta home). Angelo said he initially received short text messages from his daughter every few weeks saying she was fine and the parents should not worry or try to contact her. Those have stopped.
Y’all. I just… Wow. I really honestly have no words. Like, how? HOW?? As a parent, hoooowwww do you even allow it to get this far? (Seriously, parents reading this, please answer this question because I’m extremely lost.)
I’m tired and now I have an intercessory prayer list the size of that long-winded Buzzfeed article, so I’m just gonna leave this here and give it up to God. But to end this post on a positive note, shout out to my wise and discerning parents, Mark and Andrea Winters. I love and appreciate y’all more than you know.
