Many of you know that I’m doing a self-challenge every month (read about it here) to help me progress in certain areas of my life. So my challenge for January was no IG (read my post about it here) and February was journaling everyday.
So I’ma just be real — I didn’t fully complete my February challenge. I was doing good until I fell off towards the end of the month. BUT the plan is to continue journaling for the rest of the year, so I’m Gucci. Baby steps.
Overall it felt good to be journaling on the regular again. The first time I ever wrote in one was in the first grade. My teacher passed a journal out to everyone in the class and told us to write about whatever we felt like writing — our day, family or whatever we learned in class. I don’t remember what I wrote about, but I remember the crazy feeling I got whenever it came time to write in our journals. Expressing my thoughts via pen and paper ignited something magical in me that I never knew existed until that moment. That was the exact moment I fell in love with writing.
My journaling has come a long way from first grade though lol. Currently it’s a crazy mixture of prayers, scriptures confessionals and random thoughts splattered all over a notebook. No rules, no format, just me. I love it because it’s me putting my raw thoughts and feelings onto something I can literally grasp. Something tangible.
I was actually invited to speak to a group of young girls last month about my journey with blogging and journaling, along with the benefits of doing both. It was so rewarding to be able to share my story and explain the importance of having a healthy outlet to relieve ourselves mentally, spiritually and emotionally. A few revelations I got from journaling (almost) everyday for the past month:
- Stop thinking so hard. Anyone who knows me knows that I overanalyze pretty much everything. I can get so caught up in my head worrying about certain things I may or may not have control over, so journaling helps with that. It’s basically doing a massive brain dump. Making my thoughts visible so I can see them outside of my head — it’s almost like looking at my mind in the mirror. When you’ve got a lot on your mind, sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is let it out by writing it out.
- Let it go. Another thing I have a tendency to do is hold on to things longer than I should. But since I do prayer journaling, writing/praying it out helps me release a lot of that tension. Slowly but surely, I’m learning that once you let it out, you need to let it go and let God take it from there. You get a lot more peace of mind that way.
- Everything isn’t perfect. Journaling is an honest reminder to myself that my life isn’t perfect. It saves me from putting too much pressure on myself. It helps me see the true value of embracing the process over chasing perfection.
