Since I Don’t Do Clubs played us this week, I’m putting the list up here. Too much dope stuff going on in the D this weekend for y’all not to know about it. [Read more…]
The first time I saw the preview for Girl’s Trip, my mind instantly went into “Just wait ’til it comes out on DVD” mode. I figured it was gonna be your typical Blackbuster flick complete with gorgeous, strong, successful and low-key pretentious women who are all facing some sort of crisis in their careers and/or love lives; a couple of male melanin demigods to spice things up a bit; and a nice dose of ratchetry to bring it all together.
Actually, that’s pretty much what Girl’s Trip was, except a hundred times better. The cast was hilarious and Tiffany Haddish had me hysterical the entire time. If y’all thought her interview on Jimmie Kimmel was funny, GO SEE GIRL’S TRIP. She honestly made that whole movie.
But as comical as Girl’s Trip was, it was also filled with practical life lessons and takeaways. Here’s a list of notes I jotted down: [Read more…]
I honestly don’t know where to start so I’ma just keep typing and see where the Holy Spirit leads me with this blog post.
In the last 48 hours and counting I’ve read various articles and Facebook statuses about R. Kelly allegedly having some sort of secret sex cult comprised of women in their late teens to early twenties being held against their will. The accusations, made by two of the alleged victims’ parents, were introduced to the public yesterday in the form of a 4500-word Buzzfeed article, which read much like a diluted, bootleg version of Fifty Shades of Gray. We were meeting up for our usual happy hour date, eager to unwind from the day and search for the strongest cocktail on the menu. It had become our beloved tradition. Three friends from Howard — Kim, Kori and Kwaku — back home in The D, taking a much-needed pause from our hectic lives to confide in one another about the tumultuous life experiences of 20-something adulthood.
In between sips, bites and boozy giggles, we took turns giving the full rundown on our careers, love lives, goals, accomplishments and shortcomings. Admittedly, I was in a very weird space at the time. I felt like I’d hit a mental and spiritual roadblock, which caused me a great deal of stress and anxiety. So when I shared what I had been going through with Kim and Kwaku that day, I didn’t just need encouragement — I was desperate for it.
“You know what you need to do?” Kwaku’s eyes and voice lit up simultaneously. His positive, ambitious energy has always given me life, so I knew whatever he was about to say was definitely gonna be something worth listening to. [Read more…]
After two whole days of dodging Power spoilers on social media (to all the folk who be watching it on demand bright and early on Saturday and giving a full rundown of the show before the rest of us gets a chance to watch it, y’all are hella lame), I finally got around to watching Episode 2 of the new season.
It goes without saying that this is the worst Ghost has ever been. He’s lost control of everything — his family, his business, and even his overtly petty, backstabbing sideline hoe Angela, the very reason why James is in jail in the first place (she seriously needs to get written off the show Holly-style) — and it’s been pretty heartbreaking to watch. Never have I seen him so helpless. So off his game. So, well, powerless. [Read more…]
I shared something on my Facebook page a little over a week ago and it’s been on my heart to share it here with y’all.
So I was sitting in my car on my lunch break one day, pretending I wasn’t hungry so I wouldn’t have to buy any food. I had just gotten back from an amazing yet very expensive trip to Hawaii with my family and the LAST thing I wanted to do was spend anymore money on anything else. But I wound up deciding to go to Wendy’s to grab something quick and cheap to eat. When I pulled up to the drive-thru window to pay for my food, I was told the man in front of me had already paid for it. “Really?!” I said, smiling. When I looked ahead of me to see a gray Dodge Charger pulling out of the drive-thru, I was reminded of some things: [Read more…]
Every Father’s Day my sister Erin and I practice a sacred ritual of waiting ’til the very last minute to buy a gift. We usually get up and go to the grocery store, come home and make a huge breakfast, and then head back out to the store to find daddy a present. But since Erin recently moved back to D.C., I had to hold down our beloved tradition solo this year.
So after breakfast I took my dad to the mall to pick out his gift. On the way there, we had a conversation about things I want to achieve in life and certain decisions I’ve made relating to finances, relationships, etc. I love having these kinds of talks with my dad because he’s so chill and so wise. Plus, it’s always interesting to hear things from his perspective with him being the only man in the house (and living with three Winters women is no easy task lol). [Read more…]
For the past week I’ve been vacationing with the fam on the gorgeous island of Maui, Hawaii. And for the past week we’ve been engaging in the following activities:
- Wake up and try to figure out what/where we’re gonna eat.
- Get showered and dressed.
- Go eat.
- Go to the beach.
- Set out on our fun adventure of the day.
- Find somewhere else to eat after completing our fun adventure (like 97 percent of this entire trip consisted of us eating).
- Do some more exploring until somebody suddenly develops a sweet tooth.
- Find somewhere that has good dessert to satisfy said sweet tooth (translation: eat again).
- Head back to our condo and pass out.
One of the main highlights of our trip was traveling the Road to Hana, a historic highway (built in 1900) stretching 64 miles long from a town called Kahului to another town on the eastern side of Maui called — you guessed it! — Hana. The road was super narrow (only one lane each way) with a bunch of ridiculous curves and twists that could have anyone driving off the edge of a cliff in nanoseconds (Bless God for my daddy’s professional driving abilities!). But along the way were some of the most magnificent, serene displays of nature I’ve ever seen, which made the journey so worth it. [Read more…]
I can’t believe how over the top y’all been acting (emphasis on the word ACTING) over these male rompers aka RompHims aka Dickies Spring/Summer Collection 2017. And by “y’all” I’m talking about all y’all hypocritical arse men of African-American descent who been faking all over my group chats and social media timelines like y’all ain’t bout to be rocking a man-onesie next month. Y’all really gonna act like y’all weren’t just having the EXACT SAME conversation about wearing skinny jeans less than five years ago?? Unbelievable. [Read more…]
Mother’s Day just passed, aka the day everyone goes to brunch, takes a cute pic with their mom and posts it on social media with some long, drawn out caption expressing their love and appreciation for the woman who gave them life. Now I don’t wanna rain on y’all mamas’ parades, but Andrea Elizabeth Winters is hands down the greatest to ever do it because she’s so much more to me than my mother.
So I just wanted to quickly run down a list of all the things my mom has been to me over the past 27 years: [Read more…]
